Detailed information

One of the components of the modern electric systems are supply transformers total capacity of which exceeds generator capacity by 5–6 times owing to multiple transformation of electric energy. Despite high-level design and manufacture, supply transformers need preventive maintenance while operated: oil chromatography, electric testing, running repair and overhauling, etc. Due to inappropriate operation as well as physical and moral obsoleteness, supply transformers feature high accident risk, which is undesirable because of the loss of the worth equipment and high reconditioning investment; probability of domino effect when the process of failure grasps neighbor machines and environment; break in consumer supply. The latter can bring appreciable damage, which eventually will exceed the economic loss due to the former two causes. The problem gets even worse as the modern mains run and will run equipment with the nearly expired or long-ago expired standard life. Thus, it is possible to state that any R&D aimed to improve operational integrity of aging transformer equipment is urgent. This article reviews the current approaches and systems available for the diagnostics of oil transformers.
