INTERCONNECTION BETWEEN FORMATION OF SOLUBLE HEAVY METALS AND THEIR THERMODYNAMIC AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS IN MILL TAILINGS IN THE FAR EASTERN FEDERAL DISTRICT



The article describes the research findings on interconnection between formation of soluble heavy metals and their thermodynamic and chemical characteristics in mill tailings in the Far Eastern Federal District. The scope of the analysis encompassed the composition of chemical elements in old tailings of lead factories and possible chemical processes on the surface of tailings ponds. The chemical characteristics were the values of solubility governing transition of motionless insoluble fractions to mobile soluble fractions as well as the values of formation and dissolving of heavy metal compounds. The accomplished research shows that, alongside with the modern methods of modeling transformation of tailings with a view to predicting state changes, it is necessary to implement theoretical investigations in order to verify temporal qualitative changes in tailings and waste of closed mines in the Far Eastern Federal District. The sound decision-making requires taking into account the current state of waste at lead factories and predicting waste conversion with time towards a prevention rather than mitigation strategy.
