A key trend of using peat in compliance with the Energy Strategy of Russia up to 2035 is satisfaction of the requirements of municipal and domestic services. The advanced high-efficiency technologies and equipment will be introduced for mining, agglomeration and combustion of peat fuel for the needs of small and medium-grade energetics, as well as the share of peat in the fuel and energy balance of mining regions will be increased from the current low level (as a rule, not higher than 1–2%) to 8–10% at the least. The area of peat resources in the world is round 400 million hectares, more than one third of which belongs to Russia. Peat is a renewable resource: the accumulation rate of peat is from 0.5 to 1.0 mm/yr. The promising method of peat cutting in the framework of automation and cost saving of final production is digging in opencast mines. The evaluation of excavator parameters for vertical cutting of peat should take into account sоme constraints, among which the most important are the peat deposit strength, presence of wood inclusions, structure of peat deposits, rate of peat decomposition, etc. The operating conditions of digging tools in peat cutting are revealed.
